about

Live sets involve flexibility and improvisation, regardless of what sounds are pre-prepared. There is a structure informed by reactions to the moment - what feels right for the people who are there and the space we are in at the time. The acoustics of the room, the energy of the listeners, and the current mood (both my own and that of the others there) are all factors in how things play out.

That being said, a recording of it played back in an alternate context is inherently slightly different. As opposed to a track that is released, which is meant as a complete thing, a live set is a flexible object that is meant to be different every time, specific to the time and place in which it is played, even if the building blocks it uses are similar to other live sets or completed tracks.

Regardless of anything I just wrote, here is a recording of a live performance, recorded at Sonihouse, in Nara, Japan, in late March, 2018. It was the second of two sets I played there that night, to a small, lovely group of people in a beautiful space with amazing sound.

Plastic, metal, wood, and air coalesce with Rhodes, guitar, horns, and piano, pairing inviting, fuzzy chords with clunky and dirty mishaps. ... more
